Status of Town parks and trails as of May 7, 2025

Hurricane Helene left many of our town’s parks in ruins when it tore through Western North Carolina in late September 2024. In the days and weeks after massive floods and winds hit, our attention was solely focused on the needs of the people in our community and our neighbors. But as soon as we could, the Town of Black Mountain began the long, hard job of clearing and restoring our green spaces like parks, trails, and waterways. In addition to our own crews, the United States Army Corps of Engineers crews, FEMA, volunteers, and others have been an important part of our recovery efforts.

The good news is that we’re making progress! The south side of Veterans Park has reopened, and we anticipate that Riverwalk Dog Park will reopen this summer.

Riverwalk Dog Park: REOPENING SOON

Riverwalk Dog Park encompasses two acres. Before Helene’s destructive forces, the park featured picnic tables, a small fenced-in dog play area, and a ½-mile walking trail along the Swannanoa River. Riverwalk Park is scheduled to reopen in Summer 2025.

Veterans Park: PARTIALLY REOPENED

Black Mountain Veterans Park encompasses 27.2 acres. The park accesses the Grey Eagle Arena, Dr. John Wilson Community Garden, and the Monarch Waystation. Repair work is ongoing. As of early May, the south side of Veterans Park is reopened. The north side (near the baseball fields) is still closed for repairs.
