There are so many ways to explore the natural beauty of Western North Carolina, but the first step is always the same: step outside your door! The Town of Black Mountain’s popular Arm’s Length Adventures Series makes it easy by offering opportunities to hike, learn about nature, lend a hand, and enjoy the outdoors alongside fellow adventurers.

Program Overview
Origin: The Arm’s Length Adventures Series was launched in 2020 as a safe way for residents to get outside and socially distance during the pandemic. The Series is hosted by the Town of Black Mountain Recreation and Parks Department.
Evolution: The Series has since transformed into a staple of Black Mountain's seasonal outdoor programming.
Purpose: To provide accessible local outdoor education, environmental volunteer opportunities, community-building, and recreational outings.
Cost: All programs and workshops in the series are free, though advanced online registration is required and space is limited.
What the Series Includes
The series features guided small-group activities in and around the Black Mountain area, such as:
Guided Day Hikes: Excursions to scenic trails, regional waterfalls, and mountain summits such as Sam Knob, Hickory Branch Falls and Moore Cove Falls.
Environmental Cleanups: Volunteer efforts focus on cleaning up local spots like Lake Tomahawk, Flat Creek and area greenways.
Skill Workshop: An interactive instructional clinic on September 4 offers a great introduction to fly fishing.
Nature Education: Be sure to sign up early for the mushroom identification walk on October 2, offered in partnership with Hendersonville Parks & Rec.
